One run was enough for Raytown.
Jarrod Bennett singled in Bryan Couch in from third base in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving the Blue Jays a tough 1-0 victory over rival Raytown South in the Class 4 District 14 tournament at Rockhurst Monday.
South pitcher Derek McGowan allowed only three hits, struck out five and walked two. Winning pitcher Cody Robinson also allowed only three hits, struck out four and walked three.
Couch legged out an infield single, and was balked to second by McGowan. Bennett then failed twice to bunt Couch to third base. It didn’t batter because Couch seconds later took third on a wild pitch, setting up Bennett’s game-winning single.
“Bennett had another key hit in a big game.,” Raytown coach Jaime Oyler said. “Robinson pitched an outstanding game and kept us in the game. I couldn’t be more proud of him. He’s a junior. We made the most of our hits.”
Raytown (19-6) meets top-seeded Blue Springs South at 1 p.m. today. Rockhurst takes on second-seeded Blue Springs in the another semifinal at 4. The winners move into Wednesday’s 4 p.m. finals.
Raytown South ended a 6-17 season.
