It took Ray Williams all but a minute and a second to get Brian Snyder’s shoulders to the mat.
But the William Chrisman 189-pound wrestler’s third-period pin of Lee’s Summit North’s Brian Snyder in 4 minutes, 59 seconds helped spark the Bears to a big 38-34 season-opening victory over the Broncos Monday night at Chrisman.
Alex Keith (103 pounds) and Matt Wheaton (171) also provided crucial pins in the non-conference win.
“Keith and Wheaton did extremely well,” Chrisman coach Mick Cronk said. “We had several key pins and the match of the night was Williams over Snyder.”
Chrisman thrived in the lower and upper weights while North ruled the middle.
Keith, Colton Gordon (112) and Jake Scott (119) earned pins while Blane Deck (125) edged North’s Will Thomas for a 9-8 decision.
North won 130 pounds through 160 with pins from Chet Ford (135), Chace Shackles (140), Jacob Robertson (145) and Nathan Warman (152) and decisions by Chad Homan (130) and Wes Bowers (160).
“We didn’t get a win, but we did a good job for the first meet of the year,” North coach Cameron Clover said. “I saw some things I liked and some we need to work on. We had four freshmen in the lineup. Homan is a freshman and had his first win of the year.”
Chrisman won three of the four top weights, including Wheaton’s pin of Kyle Reis in 1:06 at 171 and Williams’ win at 189. North’s Sean Summers won a major decision at 215 but Chrisman heavyweight Cody Olsen earned a pin in 2:51 to help the Bears eke out the win.
Lee’s Summit North prevailed 40-32 in the junior varsity match.
