Independence, MO —

Hi-Boy Drive In/Post 340 enters next week’s American Legion Fifth District Tournament in a winning frame of mind.
Solid pitching and the long ball help Post 340 sweep the Sedalia Post 642 Travelers 5-3 and 12-3 in a non-league doubleheader Friday night at Crysler Stadium.
“It’s a nice way to go into district,” Post 340 manager Gary Stone said. “We have played 50 games (23-27), and now we start at new season.”
Jeff Fitzmaurice, with seventh-inning relief help from Vince Langkamp, was the winning pitcher in the first game. He struck out four and allowed five hits over six innings.
Josh Barnes singled and doubled and Brandon Wade doubled to pace Post 340, which overcame an early 2-0 deficit.
In the second game, Barnes slugged a three-run homer and singled and Steven Snyder hit a solo home run over the railroad tracks behind Crysler’s left-field wall and singled to help spark Hi-Boy to the rout. Langkamp also hit a solo homer and Philip DeGrace added two hits in the game called after 4 1/2 innings because of the eight-run mercy rule.
Christian Velez scattered six hits and struck out six for the victory.
Post 340 was never threatened after scoring four runs in the first inning.
LEE’S SUMMIT POST 189 AUXILIARY OUTLAWS 9-9, INDEPENDENCE POST 21 8-1: The Outlaws used difficult and easy ways to sweep Post 21 at Legacy Park and conclude regular season play 22-19.
“They were the better team,” Post 21 manager Tom Bush said of the Outlaws. “If we come out and play like this next week (in the Fifth District Tournament), we will have a short two games.”
Two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Outlaws in the opener. Daniel Fuchs, who relieved starter Jeremy Guzman in the sixth inning, was the winning pitcher. Grant Truster took the loss.
Chris Booth single and doubled, Kyle Clifton doubled and Truster, Arron Ray and Alex Dunn each singled twice as Post 21 wasted a 10-hit attack.
Zach Teasley allowed only two hits in five innings in pitching the second game win. The loss went to Corey Findley.
Vincent Saviano, Fuchs, Guzman and Jordan Garrett each had two hits to lead the Outlaws.
Post 21 finished its regular season 27-15.
