The host Blue Springs Post 499/Fike kept their goal of a winning record in the tournament alive, this time on the other end of a 2-1 score, beating the Blue Valley Northwest Huskies of Overland Park, Kan.
“We needed a win tonight, and if we win tomorrow, we could come out of this 3-2,” Moran said. “Last time I checked, that’s a winning record.”
Jordan Oddo pitched a seven-inning complete game, taking a no-hitter into the sixth before giving up his first hit. The Huskies got two more hits and a run in the top of the seventh, but Oddo stayed and ended the game with a bases-empty ground ball.
“You gotta give credit for two things,” Moran said. “One, Oddo pitched a great game. Two, the defense was solid behind him. (Catcher) Nick Gast also caught a great game.”
Fike got RBIs from first baseman Luke Warner in the second and right fielder Josh Smetana in the fourth.
Oddo threw only 68 pitches in seven innings.
“He did everything you want your pitcher to do in wood bat games. He threw inside, and he mixed up his pitches,” Moran said.
