MCC-Blue River soccer standout Yacine Hamchaoui can say this without exaggerating: He’s one of the country’s best junior college players.
Hamchaoui, a Van Horn High School graduate, was voted to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-American second team. The sophomore was also voted the NJCAA Region XVI Player of the Year after a season in which he led the season with 20 goals. That mark ranked 14th in the nation and he finished 23rd in the country in points (44).
“We have had a lot of very talented and accomplished players at Blue River,” Trail Blazers coach David Owens said. “However, none have achieved All-American status. With 143 soccer programs and over 3,000 players at the junior college level, to be considered one of the 20 best is a massive achievement. Yacine’s accomplishments are a credit to his hard work and coachable attitude.”
Ciara Howerton, a former Fort Osage standout, also earned honorable mention All-American status for MCC-Maple Woods. Howerton, a freshman, tallied 12 goals and eight assists this season and was also named the Region XVI Player of the Year.
“She was a great leader on and off the field,” Maple Woods coach Timo Kibune said.
