The Missouri Mavericks didn’t have to go far to add another player to its ever expanding roster.
On Tuesday, Independence’s new Central Hockey League team added left winger Ted Vandermeer, brother of recently signed forward Bill Vandermeer. The 6-foot, 176-pound Ted Vandermeer, 23, had 21 goals and 19 assists last season for the now-defunct Oklahoma City Blazers.
“Ted is a player we are obviously excited about,” said Brent Thiessen, Mavericks president and general manager. “Obviously there are some built in advantages that exist (with having Bill Vandermeer on the team). Ted is certainly a big asset to our organization. The stats speak for themselves.”
Ted Vandermeer is entering his third professional season. He spent his rookie season with the Austin Ice Bats, where he notched 41 points (17 goals and 24 assists) in 52 games.
Prior to playing professionally, Ted Vandermeer played four seasons in the junior ranks with the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League. He totaled 76 points and 32 goals in 202 career games with the Rebels.
Bill and Ted Vandermeer are two of six hockey playing brothers from the Canadian town of Caroline, Alberta. That includes Jim Vandermeer, a defenseman with the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League.
Ted Vandermeer is the 11th player signed by the expansion Mavericks, who begin play at the new Independence Events Center on Nov. 13.
