A slow start came back to haunt the St. Mary’s boys basketball team.
The host Trojans couldn’t overcome a 26-11 halftime deficit in suffering a 50-42 Crossroads Conference loss to Maranatha Academy Monday night.
Still, the Trojans (7-11, 2-3 Crossroads) trailed only 40-39 with two and half minutes remaining, but they couldn’t get over the hump. Maranatha outscored the Trojans 10-3 the rest of the way.
“In our last three home games, we are averaging only five points in the first quarter,” St. Mary’s coach Byron Jones said. “We are not mentally ready to play.”
The Trojans cut the 15-point halftime deficit to 30-28 late in the third quarter and missed a layup. They remained close, however, until Maranatha’s late spurt.
Blake Scofield tallied 11 points and Michael Monteleone added seven to lead the Trojans, who hit five 3-pointers.
Seth Swank scored 16 points to power Maranatha.
ROCKHURST 64, BLUE SPRINGS SOUTH 43: Blue Springs South couldn’t recover from a horrendous first quarter Saturday.
The Jaguars (9-11) fell behind 21-0 – the final margin – after one period in a non-conference loss to the Hawklets (16-4).
No South player reached double figures in scoring. D.J. Booker and Brandon Murillo each totaled nine points and Riley King had eight to lead the Jaguars.
Pat Jones scored 15 points and Dexter McDonald had 14 to spark Rockhurst to the victory.
