Grain Valley unleashed its trademark running game against Chillicothe.
However, the Hornets responded with a spectacular rushing effort of its own to earn a 48-16 victory.
Chillicothe, behind a punishing mix of inside running and misdirection counters, ran for more than 320 yards and 10 first downs in the first half alone en route to a 35-0 halftime advantage. For the game, the visiting Hornets piled up 438 yards rushing to Grain Valley’s 285 yards on the ground.
Chris Burns finished with 92 yards on 22 carries to lead Grain Valley’s rushing attack.
Chillicothe entered the evening as the fifth-ranked team in Class 3. Grain Valley was the ninth-ranked team in Class 4. Grain Valley coach Forrest Rovello said Chillicothe’s physical play was a key factor in the loss.
“They were better athletes than us,” Rovello said. “They were bigger, stronger and faster. We have a lot of good football players, a lot of young players. We have to learn how to play better.”
Chillicothe took control of the game early, racing to a 21-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Hornets’ running back combo of Bryce Young (4 rushes for 118 yards) and Clint Dysart (7 rushes for 125 yards) scored four touchdowns early to give Chillicothe the early cushion at halftime.
The running clock rule took effect after half as Grain Valley took the first possession. Despite the wide margin, the Eagles pounded the ball inside to running back Trace Goade on six consecutive carries on the opening drive, allowing him to gain 21 yards on the drive and a touchdown.
The score returned the clock to its normal status but Grain Valley burned 10 minutes as the Eagles pulled to within 35-6.
Grain Valley would score once more in the fourth quarter, on a 32-yard catch and run by wide receiver David Richards. However, Chillicothe used two more touchdown runs as insurance to create the final margin.
