Seven members of Blue Springs South coach Greg Oder’s 2011 Class 6 state championship football team joined three of their classmates Wednesday afternoon in signing their national letters of intent.

“This is a huge day all across the country,” said South activities director Tim Michael, who hosted the event that featured family members, coaches, fellow students and friends at the Blue Springs South Performing Arts Center.

“It’s exciting to send off these 10 young individuals to the next level of competition.

Football players who signed national letters were Dalton Brewer, Fort Hays State; Kyle Burdick, Baker University; Jordan Conaty, Central Missouri; Aaron Dougherty, Oklahoma Panhandle State; Trey Ervin, Missouri Western; Khorey Kilgore, South Dakota; and Luke Weaver, Truman State.

Also signing were Griff Cady, who running cross country at Graceland University; CJ Egelston, who will play baseball at Allen County (Kan.) Community College; and Kylie Young, who will play soccer at Southwest Baptist University.

Each student took the opportunity to thank parents, coaches and friends, but none of their high school coaches took part in the ceremony.

“This is pretty cool,” Oder said after the signing ceremony, “because you know how hard each one of those kids worked to make it to this day. From December until now, they’ve all been dealing with class work, recruiting and some of them have been playing other sports.

“I’m sure this is an exciting day – one they and their parents have looked forward to for quite some time.”
