Lee’s Summit North graduate Josh Crooks found the net twice as did Lee’s Summit Community Christian School’s Daniel Perez to help Metropolitan Community College-Blue River to a 5-4 win Tuesday over Cowley County (Kan.) Community College.
The Trail Blazers, who were the host team at MCC-Maple Woods, jumped out to leads of 3-2 and 5-3 before holding off a late Cowley charge.
“It was a back and forth game,” MCC-Blue River coach David Owens said. “Both teams had the ability to score, but had problems stopping each other.”
Steven Long (Raytown) scored a goal early in the first half and assisted on both of Crooks’ goals in the 38th and 40th minutes. Sean Lindsey (Lee’s Summit North) assisted on both of Perez’s goals.
With the win, the Trail Blazers improved to 2-0 on the young season.
Blue River women also victorious: Truman graduate Shelby Beeman scored in the 78th minute to put the game away as MCC-Blue River’s women soccer team defeated Cowley County 4-2 at MCC-Maple Woods in the regular season-opener for the Trail Blazers.
Ashley Killian (Blue Springs South) assisted on the first of Blue Springs South graduate Courtney Codilla’s two goals and Megan Codilla (Blue Springs South) assisted on Taylor Eason’s goal in the 36th minute.
“(I) saw some good things tonight,” MCC-Blue River coach Brad Childress said. “(We’ve) still got a lot to work on. It’s a good start.”
