A couple members of William Chrisman’s wrestling team struggled in the team’s final home dual Tuesday against Raytown. The Bears’ two lone seniors, Danny Klick and Jacob Shelton, certainly weren’t among that group, though.
Klick and Shelton recorded quick pins in their final bouts on a home mat. Four other Bears won their bouts against the Blue Jays and Chrisman benefited from four forfeits in rolling to a 56-17 victory.
The upper weight seniors and 106-pounder Larry Danforth all recorded first-period pins to complete the win, giving Chrisman an 8-5 record in duals (3-3 Suburban Middle Seven Conference).
“Some of the guys looked good,” Chrisman coach Mick Cronk said. “Some of the guys, I don’t know what they were doing. I was happy with some guys, but some guys could’ve wrestled a lot better.”
Louis West (138 pounds) gave Chrisman its first competitive win, beating Briar Packard 13-7 after Raytown’s Elias Hamchaoui (120) opened with a 6-3 win over Derek Williams.
At 145, Chrisman’s Deontay Lapsley converted an early takedown into a 13-0 lead after two periods against Tyler Griggs, then finished a 16-0 technical fall at the 4:33 mark. At 160, the Bears’ Josh Wallace twisted Josh Drake into a pin at 2:26.
Raytown’s other wins came from Lovell Dean at 152 (17-7 over Jesse Titus), Josh Donovan at 170 (13-3 over Matt Whitworth) and Denziel Perkins at 182 (pin of Taylor Blann in 1:39).
Klick, facing a bumped-up Anthony Ash at 220, scored a couple easy takedowns before making his third one stick at 1:23. Such a match isn’t an ideal tune-up for districts this weekend, as Klick looks to earn a repeat state berth, but he said winning last Saturday’s tournament at Oak Grove will serve well.
“That gives me some confidence going in,” said Klick, who sports a 41-3 record. “I wanted to get a few takedowns, kind of get some work in.”
Cronk appreciated that the Blue Jays didn’t let Klick idle in his final home match.
“They did a real class act of giving Danny a match when they didn’t have to,” Cronk said. “If he has a good district tournament, which I expect him to, he’s gonna break some school records. But that’s not what we’re concerned about; we’re looking at podium in Columbia.”
Shelton (285) decked Reid Marple in 1:20, while Danforth was up 10-0 on Keeoctea May before getting the pin in 1:41. The Blue Jays also forfeited 195 and 113.
“The last couple years, I definitely had some hard seasons,” said Shelton, who takes a 26-16 record into the Class 4 District 4 Tournament Friday and Saturday at Raymore-Peculiar High School in Peculiar. “This year’s been going really good for me. It’s experience, but also coach Cronk does a good job of teaching us to have confidence in ourselves.
“After New Year’s that’s when it really started to happen. From that point on, it’s been really good.”
