AREA OUTDOORS CALENDAR

THIS WEEK
MAY 20: Bird Watchers: Habitat Trail – 8:30-10 a.m. for ages 20 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. From beginners to advanced, all birding levels are welcome. This month explore the Habitat Trail. Meet at the Habitat Trail parking lot and set out from there. Call 816-228-3766 to register.
MAY 20, 21 & 22: Missouri Department of Conservation Hunter Education Class – 6-9:30 p.m. each day at George Owens Nature Center in Independence. Dan Laitner is the instructor. Pre-register by calling 816-325-7370. Students must attend all three sessions to qualify. Students 15 and younger must bring proof of age.

MAY 24: Squirrel Hunting Season Opens – The squirrel hunting season opens in Missouri and runs through Feb. 15, 2009. There is no limit. For regulations, see the Missouri Wildlife Code online at www.mdc.mo.gov/seasons/.
MAY 24: Black Bass Fishing Season Opens – Black bass fishing season for specified streams opens in Missouri and runs through Feb. 28, 2009. For limits and regulations, see the Missouri Wildlife Code online at www.mdc.mo.gov/seasons/.
MAY 25: Tree-rific Discoveries – 2-3:30 p.m. for all ages at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Discover the different types of trees at Burr Oak Woods and their interesting uses. No registration required. Call 816-228-3766 for more information.
MAY 26: Holiday Hike – 2-3:30 p.m. for all ages at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Spend Memorial Day, the traditional kickoff of summer, hiking through the woods at Burr Oak Woods. Please bring water and wear sturdy shoes for the hike. Meet at the Bethany Falls trailhead. No registration required. Call 816-228-3766 for more information.
MAY 28: Burr Oak Creek Stream Families: Creek Bank Stabilization – 6-8 p.m. for individuals and families with children ages 8 and older at Burr Oak Woods Creek in Blue Springs. Work together to assess the health of Burr Oak Creek, in this two part program, and help keep it beautiful and healthy. In this session, help plant native trees to help stabilize some raw areas along the creek banks and conduct a litter pick-up. Please call to register. Be prepared to get muddy and wet. MAY 31: Family Fishing – 10 a.m. to noon for ages 5 and older at Burr Oak Woods educational pond in Blue Springs. Learn the basics of fishing, provide equipment and worms, then your family can try their luck. Attendees ages 16 to 64 must have a valid fishing license, which are available at Burr Oak Woods Nature Center. Call 816-228-3766 to register.
MAY 31: Dutch Oven Cooking 101 – 10-11:30 a.m. for ages 16 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Learn the basics of Dutch oven cooking. Selecting equipment and how to season and care for your ovens will be discussed. Also learn how and what to cook and taste a Dutch oven dish. Call 816-228-3766 to register.

BURR OAKS FEEDING TIME – 3 p.m. on Sundays and Wednesdays at the Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Help feed the animals on display at the Burr Oak Woods Nature Center. No registration is required. Please call 816-228-3766 for more information.
LAKE CITY SHOOTING HOURS: Hours for public shooting are Wednesday through Sunday at Lake City Range and Training Center near Blue Springs. Shooters are required to provide own eye and ear protection. Booth fees are $3 per hour. 229-4448.
