Independence, MO —

Midway through his final year of basketball, Drew Spears found out some sad news.
His school – Englewood Christian – would be closing for good. He was a part of the last basketball team at the school and the last graduating class for the school.
“It was sad,” Spears said. “It’s the last year of the school, so it’s sad for all the athletes. But we were glad we were able to compete and play better than we did last year when I first started. So it was sad and happy at the same time.”
Little did Spears know that basketball team would be the last team in the history of Englewood Christian, as the baseball team was forced to end its season just three games into the season.
“It’s disappointing, because I was looking forward to playing more games, competing and winning more than we have,” he said. “I thought our team had the potential to finish the season with a lot more wins. It was hard. Phillip (Chambers), the other senior on the team, was disappointed as well.”
Spears’ sports career is not over. He will get a chance to compete in baseball after all, signing to play at Metropolitan Community College-Blue River next year.
“I’m really excited for it,” he said. “I can’t wait to get out there. The athletes are a lot better, so I really want to learn from them.”
And while Spears prepares for the new beginning of college, he said he will miss his alma mater.
“I’ll always remember how great the teachers were to us,” he said. “They offered their time to help us out, so our grades stayed up. They stayed after school and helped us out a lot.”
