The overwhelming majority of the 2,400 workers at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence work for the private contractor, ATK, that runs the plant.
The company would not give any specifics about how it might handle the federal sequestration other than issuing a statement that it “remains committed to providing quality products and services to our customers” and that it would be flexible.
About 30 federal employees at Lake City, however, are facing the likelihood of 22 weeks of furloughs – one day a week off without pay – equating to a pay cut of 20 percent for that time.
