The Fort Osage School District has implemented a new fee structure for organizations using district facilities.
“The fees are mostly used for custodians and other staff who must be at the building to clean things and lock up after the group is finished,” said Stephanie Smith, public information director for the Fort Osage School District. “It would help us make up some of the costs we have been losing.”
The Fort Osage Board of Education approved the fee structure Tuesday.
In the fee structure plan, groups are divided into three categories – nonprofit, for profit and nonprofit with school agreements such as athletic booster clubs, Project Graduation, Fort Osage Youth League, the alumni association, AFS, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts or other groups that have ties to the schools. Nonprofit groups can include anything from the Community Services League and churches to other competitive youth teams.
For-profit groups will not be allowed to use district facilities. In addition, groups will not be able to rent the varsity football or soccer fields.
The fee structure breaks down the cost to rent a facility on a per hour basis such as non-equipment classrooms for $10 per hour. The most expensive facility to rent is the running track and field event areas, which is $75 per hour. Staff fees, such as those for custodians or security, are separate.
The only difference to the facility usage agreement that was discussed in May are class reunions. The board approved an amendment that allows class reunion groups to use the schools for free, rather than being charged a fee.
The board also discussed the One-for-One program. This program would put a piece of technology, such as a laptop or iPad, in the hands of every Fort Osage student. Superintendent Mark Enderle has been discussing this plan for the last year and many staff members are attending conferences this summer that highlight the idea.
Fort Osage already has sets of iPads at Osage Trail and Fire Prairie middle schools. The technology is used primarily in mathematics and communication arts to improve a student’s academic achievement.
