Sugar Creek voters on Tuesday easily approved two measures that will lengthen terms for elected officials and, it is hoped, save the city money.

Question No. 1 on Tuesday’s ballot changes the two-year term for mayor to four years. That passed 226-125 (64.39 percent to 35.61 percent).

Question No. 2 changes the two-year term for aldermen to four. It passed 211-140 (60.11 percent to 39.89 percent).

“I think it was a show of confidence, and that’s good,” said Mayor Stan Salva.

The changes do not affect the terms of those currently in office. The city has elections next spring.

State statutes allow smaller cities to make the change. City elections typically have a low turnout but can cost up to $5,000, the mayor has said.

Salva said there was no intense campaigning on the change, mostly just a couple of items in the city’s newsletter.

“The people read our newsletter and believed us, I guess,” he said.
