School children in two area school districts will once again have access to free breakfast and lunch this summer.

The Fort Osage and Blue Springs school districts are offering the program through funding from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. The locations are chosen based on the district’s percentage of free and reduced-price lunch students at those sites. At least 50 percent of the school’s student population must qualify for free and reduced lunch.

All children age 18 and younger are welcome to participate in the breakfast and lunch programs, regardless of their income. Adults can also eat, but for a fee. Meals are similar to what is served during the regular school year.

In the Fort Osage School District, breakfast and lunch will be available at Cler-Mont and Elm Grove elementary schools as well as the First Baptist Church in Buckner. Breakfast will be served from 8 to 9 a.m. and lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m. Meals will be served from June 26 until Aug. 3. The adult breakfast is $1.85 and adult lunch is $2.60.

The Blue Springs School District is offering the program at five sites – Thomas Ultican and James Walker elementary schools, Blue Springs High School, the Blue Springs Freshman Center and The Blue (formerly Centennial Pool-Plex). The program at the elementary schools ends July 27. At the high school, it ends June 29.

Breakfast at the elementary schools is from 8 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. At the high school and Freshman Center, breakfast is from 7 to 7:30 a.m. and lunch is from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m.

Lunch only is served at The Blue. It is served from noon to 1:30 p.m. with an afternoon snack between 3:30 and 4 p.m. The program will continue until Aug. 14.

“What a great way to come out here, have fun and get a free meal (through the lunch program),” said Bill Shalley, manager of The Blue. “You just can’t beat that.”

The Independence School District also offered a similar program, but the elementary program ends today. The high school program continues through June 27. Adult breakfast is $1.85 and adult lunch is $2.85.

Truman High School is the only high school site this year. Breakfast is served from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m., and lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Boys and Girls Club of Great Kansas City-Hawthorne is offering the program through Aug. 7. Breakfast is from 8 to 9 a.m. and lunch is from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m.

For more information on the breakfast and lunch program, call the Fort Osage School District at 816-650-7000 or the Blue Springs School District at 816-224-1300. Information is also available by visiting the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services website at www.dhss.mo.gov/sfsp.
