Police are continuing their search for the third day of the shoreline of the Little Blue River for evidence after two kayakers on Monday discovered the skeletal remains of a human hand.

Independence police confirmed that police and other personnel are searching about 1 1/2 miles of shoreline from where the hand was found.

A pair of boaters made the discovery about 3 p.m. Monday. Police said the hand was up against some rocks along the shore at a spot north of R.D. Mize Road near South Necessary Road.

Sharp had dispelled speculation on Tuesday that the remains were those of Summer Shipp, whose body was found in 2007. She had gone missing in December 2004 while conducting market research in the 1500 block of West College Terrace in Independence.

The hand, which also included parts of forearm bones, was found about 1 1/2 miles upstream from where Shipp was found.

A forensic anthropologist was expected to examine the remains Tuesday to make a determination on the gender.

Anyone with information should call 816-474-TIPS.
