The base teacher’s salary in the Grain Valley School District has been competitive with other districts of its size for the last few years. However, the same cannot be said when looking toward the upper end of the salary schedule.
That will start to change with the 2012-13 school year.
The Grain Valley Board of Education approved the 2012-13 salary schedule as well as the 2012-13 budget Thursday.
“We have always been competitive on our base, but where we started to fall short was the experience or years of service,” said Assistant Superintendent Marc Snow. “That is why this year, we focused more on being competitive in those areas.”
Teachers move up on a salary schedule based on the number of years served in the district and over based on how many additional academic credit hours they have earned. Teachers on Step 6 will receive an additional $300. Teachers on Step 8 will receive an additional $600, and teachers on Step 11 will see a salary increase of $1,000. The base teacher’s salary remains the same at $34,000.
In addition, $1 was added to the base salary of secretaries, health aides and computer technicians.
The board also approved next year’s budget. The anticipated revenues are $36.83 million, while the anticipated expenditures will be $37.51 million. This is a deficit of just more than $672,000, which would come from the district’s reserve funds.
Snow cautioned, however, that because the budget is a working document, that deficit spending number is likely to change by this time next year.
“Last year, we were predicting to have a deficit budget of $800,000,” he said. “But at the end of the year, we actually have a surplus.”
A portion of that surplus money, $400,000, will be used to do several projects throughout the district this summer. The board approved using the funds to purchase and install lights at the baseball field, expand the bus parking lot at the transportation building, create a bus loop around Grain Valley North Middle School and purchase new kitchen equipment for Grain Valley North Middle School.
