Independence At-Large City Council Member Lucy Young has resigned.

Mayor Don Reimal announced Young’s resignation, effective Tuesday, at the start of Monday night’s council meeting. Young was not in attendance.

Reimal said he was told Young’s resignation is health-related. Attempts to reach Young by email and by phone Monday evening were unsuccessful.

“I’m really saddened,” Reimal said, in tears. “She’s a good friend. No matter what the reason, everyone is concerned for her. She’s in our prayers.”

An Independence resident since 1992, Young served on the City Council from 1998 to 2002. She lost her re-election bid in 2002 but was elected again in 2006 and in 2010.

“Every day, I get the opportunity to help somebody that’s in a problem,” Young said shortly before her re-election in 2010. “That’s the most fulfilling (aspect) of being a council member – you are a public servant.”

The city is taking the steps to get an election in order to select a new at-large council member, Reimal said. Last summer, following the death of former District 2 Council Member Will Swoffer, the council members approved a detailed scheduled and process for electing the new council member since the City Charter doesn’t outline one.

District 3 Council Member Myron Paris publicly thanked Young for her time on the council.

“I just wanted to thank Lucy for all of her participation and endeavors on this council,” Paris said. “She’s been a big help to me and a big help to her constituents. We’re going to miss her.”
