The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department confirmed today that a shoe found on the bank of the Little Blue River did contain the remains of a human foot.
Sgt. Ronda Montgomery, spokesperson for the department, said that the county’s medical examiner had examined the size 13 shoe and discovered the remains of a foot inside. As a result, the department and search teams are searching the area at Blue Mills and Old Blue Mills Road, or 10 miles north of where kayakers found the remains of a hand about two weeks ago.
Montgomery said the department is asking that people avoid entering the Little Blue River in that general area today while police and teams search the neighboring woods and river banks. The Little Blue Trace Trail, a popular biking and hiking trail along the river, is open.
“We don’t think at this time that the hand and foot are related,” Montgomery said, adding that the hand remains had been sent to the University of Texas to be examined because the county lacked the equipment to run DNA comparisons.
The foot remains have been sent to the Kansas City crime lab for analysis.
