A young man was killed and another person was injured in a shooting during an altercation on Labor Day afternoon at Rotary Park in southwest Independence.

Independence Police were still looking for a suspect late Monday night, police spokesman Tom Gentry said.

Gentry said the shooting happened about 5 p.m. at the park, where a couple of family groups had gathered for the holiday. At some point, an altercation erupted and a man went to a vehicle and returned with a gun. He shot two people and then left in the vehicle.

The victims were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries, and one of the victims died. Gentry did not have a description or condition update on the second victim late Monday.

Police found the vehicle believed to be the shooter's, and it appeared he had abandoned it and left on foot. At one point, he was described in a radio report as a Hispanic male, but Gentry had no description to offer.
