Woods Chapel Road area residents are getting a lot of attention this year.

On Monday, the Blue Springs Planning Commission passed two critical proposals – a concept plan and preliminary plan –  that forward the ambitious Oaks at Woods Chapel Road project.

The approximately 61-acre area will have three retail buildings, one restaurant and a possible grocery store at the intersection of Woods Chapel and Valley View roads. The first business that is likely to be built is a CVS drug store.

The building that may hold a grocery store is approximately 80,000 square feet, but planners behind the project aren’t ready to confirm that possibility. Rumors that the restaurant will be a fast-food restaurant are just rumors, the planners said, adding that they’re hopeful it will be a sit-down establishment.

If nothing else, the project highlights an area of the city that has long needed attention.

“As a District 2 resident of the past 28 years, a lot of us are grateful this is going on,” Commissioner Lynn Banks said. “We’ve been feeling neglected.”

The project, which will be built in phases but does not yet have a definitive time line, coincides with the road and interchange improvements that are ongoing at Woods Chapel and Interstate 70.

Commission members acknowledged that the area will be quite cluttered and busy during construction, but it’s worth it, they said.

“It’s a nice looking plan and an asset to that area,” Commissioner Susan Culpepper said. “It’s been greatly needed there.”
