A man who apparently stole a truck crashed it in Grain Valley and died when the truck caught fire Tuesday morning.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Ronda Montgomery said the man has not yet been identified.

“The body was too badly burned,” Montgomery said. “At this point, we have no idea who it is.”

At approximately 10 a.m. Tuesday, a Grain Valley resident called the Sheriff’s Office to report they had heard a crash and saw a truck on fire in another neighbor’s front yard.

Firefighters from the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District responded and put out the fire but discovered human remains near the vehicle.

An investigation showed the driver of the truck was traveling south on the 7200 block of Arnett Road when it lost control after topping a hill. After the truck veered off the east side of the road, it crashed through a fence, spun around and caught fire.

The vehicle, Montgomery said, had been reported stolen out of Lee’s Summit.

Montgomery said the county medical examiner has taken the remains to determine the identity of the driver.

At the request of CJC, Missouri state fire marshals were investigating the scene with assistance from the Grain Valley Police Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
