A Blue Springs man faces a felony charge in connection with the torture and killing of a cat, an act recorded on his cell phone.

Blue Springs police were summoned to an apartment in the 2000 block of Ninth Street at about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday. Brandon S. Krahenbuhl, 23, had called 911, saying he having a mental breakdown and was homicidal and suicidal.

According to the Police Department’s probable-cause statement in the incident, Krahenbuhl made suicidal statements to an officer and told her he had “tortured and killed a cat.” He told another officer he did that so he wouldn’t kill himself or someone else.

Police also said the man’s 3-month-old daughter was alone in his care at the time.

Krahenbuhl gave an officer his cell phone, which had a recording of the gray-and-white cat flailing as it was being hanged with a noose. It got free, but Krahenbuhl grabbed it and threw it against a wall twice – hard enough to cause dents in the Sheetrock.

He held the cat, which appeared to lose consciousness. He laid it down, but when it twitched, he stepped on it, apparently killing it.

The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said Friday that Krahenbuhl has been charged with animal abuse, a Class D felony. He was being held on a $50,000 bond.

On Wednesday, police took him to a local hospital with a 96-hour hold. They recovered the rope and the cell phone.

Police found the cat’s body in a trash bin behind the apartment.
