Children’s Mercy Hospital has reached another milestone as it nears opening its Independence facility later this year.
The hospital recently finished raising $5.5 million it needed as a match for a $1 million grant from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation of Tulsa.
“It means that we are going to be able to provide services to Eastern Jackson County at an accelerated pace,” said Brad Leech, the hospital’s vice president of resource development.
Meanwhile, progress continues at Children’s Mercy East, set to open his fall in the Trinity Woods development near Corner Cafe and the Drury Inn at the southeast corner of Interstate 70 and Little Blue Parkway.
The grant process was immensely valuable to the hospital, Leech said. Of its 97 top donors of the $5.5 million, 41 percent were new givers, accounting for $1.3 million. Some who gave four-figure donations in the past stepped up to five figures this time, and some went from five figures to six. That broadens the hospital’s donor base for the future and helps the hospital secure its presence in Eastern Jackson County, Leech said.
“… We’re here to stay, and philanthropy makes that possible,” he said.
It was the Children’s Mercy staff that contributed the final $75,000 to meet the $5.5 million goal. Leech also said Independence business owners Ken and Cindy McClain, who chaired the fundraising drive, were essential to the effort.
“Our staff worked really hard to get this done. Ken and Cindy McClain helped significantly,” he said.
The hospital is in the midst of a larger overall fundraising drive, and at some time it will need to raise $11 million for the imaging center at the Independence site. The space for that is already part of the three-story, 55,000-square-foot hospital now going up.
In addition to its main facility on 2401 Gillham Road on Hospital Hill in Kansas City, Children’s Mercy has hospitals on 110th Street in Overland Park and on Barry Road north of the river in Kansas City. It has clinics in Kansas City, Mo., Kansas City, Kan., and Overland Park.
