For the first time in its eight-season history, Adventure Oasis Water Park will close two weeks early.

The Independence pool’s last day is Aug. 12. Parks and Recreation opted to close the facility at 2100 S. Hub Drive before the Labor Day weekend this year as a cost-savings measure, since fewer patrons visit the Water Park once school is in session, Parks and Recreation Director Eric Urfer said.

Independence School District classes start on Aug. 15 for grades 1 through 12. The Blue Springs School District also starts school that day.

“We took a hard look over the Water Park’s history, and we took a hard look at the patron use from mid-August through Labor Day weekend,” Urfer said. “Traditionally, the Water Park is open only on the weekends once school is in operation. What we found was that the expenses far outpaced the revenues for those seven operating days. We’ll realize a significant savings by closing once school starts.”

As Adventure Oasis Water Park closes out its 2012 season, Fido and Spot will still have the opportunity to go for a swim.

“Waggin’ at the Water Park” is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 18 at Adventure Oasis, allowing man’s best friend a chance to enjoy the pool before it is drained. Admission is $5 per dog, and concessions will be available for owners at the Oasis Grill. Pet-related booths also will be set up.

Participants must adhere to the following rules at the event:

  • Only dogs are allowed in the water; no humans will be allowed to play in the water.
  • Aggressive dogs are not allowed.
  • One dog is allowed per adult (persons must be at least age 18).
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Owners must pick up after their dogs.

As for the streak of recent hot weather, Urfer said attendance at Adventure Oasis has been steady and slightly higher than in years past.

“However,” he added, “when the temperatures reach 100-plus degrees for a series of days, people just stop coming out their houses – period. We tend to see a decrease when there are several days of 100-plus degrees weather.”

Parks and Recreation hasn’t received any concern or negative feedback about the early closure, “which goes to tell us that it confirms that patron usage wasn’t that strong after school started,” Urfer said.

“We’ll monitor it, and see how it goes and continue to monitor whether to close before Labor Day next year,” he said. “There’s still lots of summer left, and we encourage people to come try the Water Park – it’s a great place to be.”
