The expansion Mavericks built a 3-0 lead early in the second period and hung on for a 3-1 victory over the Mississippi RiverKings Thursday night in the decisive game of the best-of-three playoff series at the DeSoto Civic Center.


Charlie Effinger stonewalled the RiverKIngs, stopping 36 of 37 shots to help the Mavericks advance to the second round against Northern Conference points champion Rapid City. The series against the Rush gets under way at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at the Independence Events Center.


Brett Hammond scored off an assist from Blake Forsyth just 1 minute, 14 seconds into the first period to give the Mavericks the early lead. Bill Vandermeer then scored an unassisted power-play goal at the 17:43 mark of the first to give Missouri a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.


Three minutes into the second period, Braden Walls scored on a pass from Nick Sirota to put the Mavericks ahead 3-0.


Stephen Margeson scored for Mississippi at the 12:50 mark of the second period to make it 3-1, but Effinger stopped the rest of the RiverKings' shots, including 17 in the final period, to seal the victory and give the Mavs their first playoff series win in team history.
