A look back at the biggest moments in high school sports in 2011.
May 30: Eastern Jackson County is well represented at the Missouri State Track and Field Championships in Jefferson City. Blue Springs senior Monet Jackson ends her career with a state title in the shot put, and William Chrisman junior Jordan Warner finishes first in the high jump. Nothing tops the collective effort of the Lee’s Summit North girls squad, however, as the Broncos close the season with a team title.
Feb. 19: Greg Hegarty, Lewis Foutz, Darick Lapaglia and Daniel Lewis score individual titles to lead the Blue Springs wrestling team to a Missouri Class 4 team championship in Columbia. Oak Grove takes home Missouri’s Class 2 crown.
Nov. 5: Blue Springs South senior Samantha Nightingale caps her storied cross country career with her second consecutive Missouri Class 4 state championship in Jefferson City.
Nov. 18-19: Although no local teams compete, a soccer state championship is determined on KC-metro turf as Blue Springs and Blue Springs South host the Missouri State Soccer Championships. Approximately 6,000 fans flock to Blue Springs to take in the semifinal and championship games. It’s only the second time since 1986 that a state championship has been hosted in the metro.
Nov. 26: Despite suffering defeats to Blue Springs and Rockhurst early in the season, the Blue Springs South football team bounces back with a memorable postseason run that ends with the program’s second state championship after knocking off top-ranked Christian Brothers College High School 40-37 in the Missouri Class 6 Show-Me Bowl at the Edwards Jones Dome in St. Louis.
