Ross J. Higbee Jr., 89, of Independence, Missouri, passed away August 18, 2010.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, August 23, 2010, at St. Mary’s Church, 611 North Liberty Street, Independence Mo. The rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m.  

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at St. Mary’s Church. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Lunch will be provided at St. Mary’s following burial.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to St. Mary’s Church Food Pantry.

Ross was born April 23, 1921, in Independence, Mo., to Ross J. and Loretta (Fraher) Higbee. He graduated from De La Salle Academy and attended Rockhurst College. Ross served in the Army during World War II, in the Signal Corps, attached to the 13th Air Force in the Pacific. He worked in construction in Alaska.

Ross returned to Independence where he was employed by Standard Oil Company in Sugar Creek, retiring after 33 years of service.

He married Verna Catherine Bailey at St. Mary’s Church in Independence and became active members in their parish. They delivered Meals on Wheels and worked for the food pantry for a number of years.

Ross is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Verna Catherine Higbee in 2004; two brothers, Philip and Paul; sister, Mary (Higbee) Truman.  

He is survived by his seven children – daughter, Linda Higbee; six sons, Mike Higbee and wife Norma of Independence; Mark Higbee of Lee’s Summit; Robert Higbee of Kansas City, Mo.; David Higbee and wife Donna of Tonganoxie, Kan.; Joseph Higbee and wife Suzanne of Independence; Patrick Higbee and wife Carla of Kansas City, Mo.; brother, Richard Higbee and wife Muriel in Texas; cousins and close friends, Shirley Fraher of Independence and Charles Fraher of Foley, Ala.; nine grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jane, Jill, Angela, Daniel, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Matthew, Rachel and their spouses; two step-grandsons, Eric Bower and Joel Blevins; four great granddaughters, Taylor, Trystan, Taryn, and Ella; four step great-grandchildren, Celena, Lexee, Shannah and Julien; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
