  • An Independence city employee found what appeared to be a human fetus Saturday morning while routinely inspecting a sewer pumping station.
    Independence police detectives were called about 8:30 a.m. to the station near Dickinson and Mayes roads. The employee had found what appeared to be a human fetus in the sewer treatment plant. 
    According to the Jackson County Medical Examiner, the fetus appeared to be in the first trimester and the examiner's office will continue investigating. The area in which the discovery was made receives sewer waste from thousands of locations. There is no apparent foul play present.
