• Don’t let Missouri fall to the bottom

  • To the editor:
I am a recent graduate from the University of Central Missouri and have recently gained employment with a union construction company based in Kansas City. Unions in Kansas City are defending themselves from three new bills. Right to work, paycheck deception and the prevailing wage are topics of discussion for these bills.
My father has been a member of the Communications Workers of America, Local 6360, for more than 30 years and is a current chief steward. This has allowed him to raise a family and give us every opportunity available. Unions are the reason families like mine are important to our economy. Unions have changed the way work is done in this country and give us all a chance to succeed. The 40-hour work week, pensions, workplace safety, health care, disability pay and paid vacation time are benefits that unions have brought about to provide the American worker everything they need for success.
The craft workers employed by my company are union members. Many of them are operators out of Local 101 and others are laborers from Local 663. We take pride in our employees and provide the utmost care and security for each one of them. Our employees count on us to be competitive in our bids and provide work for them every day. Right to work, paycheck deception, and the prevailing wage are all things that affect our business, allowing us to be competitive in an already stretched-thin market.
Republicans in Missouri are attacking unions by pushing right to work, paycheck deception, and trying to rig the prevailing wage laws in this session. We need legislators who want to improve and grow the middle class; not drag Missouri to the bottom. We need more union members in Missouri, not less.
