  • The Grain Valley boys tennis team got things started right in its Missouri River Valley Conference West opener Thursday.
Singles victories by Theo Nichols (8-6), Lane Elliott (8-0), Cody Zeigler (8-1), Michael Hicks (8-1), Jordan Snyder (8-0) and Chris Eubank (8-1) set up an 8-1 road victory over Excelsior Springs.
The doubles teams of Nichols and Elliott and Zeigler and Hicks each won 8-2.
BLUE SPRINGS 8, STALEY 1: Six singles victories clinched the home victory for the Wildcats Thursday.
Chad Stohlman (10-6), Mitchell Wilhoit (10-2), Sam Phillips (10-2), Brice Webb (11-10, 7-2), Craig Evans (10-6) and Spencer Morgan (10-1) earned singles wins.
Stohlman and Webb won 10-5 in doubles while Wilhoit and Phillips triumphed 10-3.
“We had a couple of kids absent and a couple of junior varsity kids stepped in and did a fantastic job,” Blue Springs coach Jody McClain said. “The whole team played well.”
TRUMAN 6, OAK PARK 3: Four singles victories, two via tiebreaker, and a pair of doubles triumphs boosted Truman to the win Thursday at Oak Park High School.
Nick Wagner and Jewlian Cordry won tiebreakers by scores of 8-6 and 7-3, respectively, while Zach Felz (10-1) and Sam Heacock (10-7) also prevailed.
Felz and Heacock teamed up for a 10-4 doubles win and Cordry and Devin Peel secured a 10-8 decision.
“I was so proud of the team in gutting out tonight’s victory,” Truman coach Willis Blinzler said. “... (Wagner and Cordry) both were able to dig deep and win when it counted the most. After going up 4-2 in singles, we kept the intensity going in doubles and played some of the best tennis I have seen from us yet.”
