To the editor:
Six years ago I joined the Independence YMCA because I wanted a conveniently located, community oriented facility with every exercise option I might use.
I got all that and much more. The incredible staff and wonderful members there have become like family to me. I found myself women into a social fabric that inspired me and supported me and made many a bad day better. Not only was my life enriched by my steadily improving health, but also by a culture of caring that I found there.
I am deeply distressed by the Greater Kansas City YMCA’s decision to close our Y. There is nowhere in Independence that has all that our Y has to offer. In addition to extensive exercise facilities, the Independence YMCA has an array of programs and activities for children through seniors, some of which extend into our school district and the whole community.
Our YMCA has made Independence a safer, stronger and healthier place to live. Its closing will be a great loss to our community and appears to be a contradiction to the YMCA’s stated mission.
