A Fort Osage Fire Protection District assistant chief died in the line of duty Sunday night.
Firefighters were called to a reported structure fire on Atherton Road at about 9:40 p.m. Assistant Chief Harold Hollingsworth, 47, headed for the scene.
This was during one of the waves of heavy thunderstorms rolling through the area, and Hollingsworth’s vehicle went off the road and hit a tree. He was taken to Centerpoint Medical Center died shortly thereafter.
Hollingsworth was a 16-year veteran of the fire protection district. He was named assistant chief in December 2010.
“Assistant Chief Hollingsworth was a valued member of the Fort Osage Fire Protection District and served this community with honor and integrity,” the district said in a statement. “He leaves behind a loving family and fire department family.”
