An agreement between Kansas City and Jackson County that calls for a regional jail and the housing of Kansas City inmates at the county’s detention center was approved last week by the Kansas City Council, County Executive Mike Sanders reported Monday at the Legislature meeting.

Formal negotiations can now begin to move the plan of working out specific details in a deal that will transfer inmates from the Municipal Correctional Institute to the Jackson County Detention Center and ultimately create a regional jail.

Jackson County last week presented a memorandum of understanding with the county and Kansas City that outlines the plan where the city will pay the county $57 per day for 150 beds for the current population at MCI. The first year price tag for the city: $3.1 million. Also, the city will pay an intake fee of $3 per inmate.

The third and fourth floors of the nearby Community Justice Building will provide additional space for the added inmates. Program space will be added to the fourth floor.
