Bre Dayton was feeling it on Senior Night at Blue Springs South High School.
So were her Jaguar teammates, as they rolled to a 58-26 victory over visiting Fort Osage on an icy Monday night.
“I was feeling it, so I just kept shooting the ball,” said Dayton, one of two seniors on the 9-11 Jaguars. “It felt good. It was good win. It’s nice to win on Senior Night.”
Dayton scored 10 first-quarter points to help the Jaguars get off to an impressive 16-6 lead.
“That’s been our story most of the season,” Fort Osage coach Dawn Williams said after her Indians fell to 4-15 win the non-conference loss. “If we get off to a good start, we can be competitive.
“When we get off to a start like we did tonight, well, you saw the end result.”
Dayton finished with 12 points and fellow senior Zakila Smith added six.
“I’m happy for the seniors, they deserve a win like this,” South coach Fawna Harrison said as the girls on the team marched under an archway of balloons into the school’s Hall of Fame room.
“This was our last home game and we’ve got four road games – at Liberty, Blue Springs, Lee’s Summit North and Chrisman. We have some winnable games among those four games and the girls should be confident after a win like this.
“You know, this is a game I think we should have won. But there have been other games this year where we think we should have won, and we didn’t. So this is a nice win for the team.”
Dayton hit her first four shots in the first period – two field goals and two 3-pointers – as the Jaguars raced off to a 10-point advantage.
Junior Kariel Hutt then got in on the scoring action in the second period as she scored six of her game-high 20 points and the Jaguars rolled into halftime with a 34-18 lead.
The Indians had issues with ball control in the third period as they turned the ball over on seven consecutive possessions. That led to a 14-0 Blue Springs South run.
“We couldn’t get the ball down the court,” Williams said. “I was putting three new guards in at a time and it didn’t matter. We had a real problem in the third period and South took advantage of it.”
Harrison emptied her bench in the fourth quarter as South gained a 30-point lead and the running mercy clock.
“I’m happy for our seniors,” said Hutt, who dominated play at both ends of the court. “We forced a lot of turnovers in the third quarter and played good defense the whole game.
“It’s going to be fun going to our party with a win.”
Alyssa Faiva led the Indians with 15 points. She ended the third-quarter scoring drought with a layup at 1:29 of the period.
“No. 14 (Faiva) is a very good player,” Hutt said. “They just didn’t get her the ball enough tonight.”
South won the junior varsity game 45-27.
