Excellent pitching lifted Blue Springs Post 499/Fike to a 3-1 and 12-2 sweep of the Odessa Maxim Security Bats in an American Legion Zone 2 East doubleheader Sunday night at Hidden Valley Park.
It seems as if there’s no stopping Blue Springs Post 499/Fike.
Excellent pitching lifted Fike to a 3-1 and 12-2 sweep of the Odessa Maxim Security Bats in an American Legion Zone 2 East doubleheader Sunday night at Hidden Valley Park.
“It was real important to get these two games in after being off a couple of days,” Fike manager Jim Moran said. “We got two well-pitched games with two different styles. We took advantage of a couple of errors in the first game and the hitting woke up in the second game.”
Danny McMurtrey allowed only two hits and struck out 11 to pitch Fike to the 3-1 victory. The only Bats hit came on Riley Glasgow’s seventh-inning home run.
Sam Morman singled twice and scored two runs and Josh Smetana drove in two runs on a hit and out.
Fike collected 18 hits in the second game to improve to 32-4 overall and 18-2 in league play.
Morman went 4-for-4 with three singles and a two-run homer and pitched a five-inning three-hitter with 11 strikeouts to spark Fike to the win. Mike Spyers, Smetana and Gehrig Hudson each added three hits.

After falling 20-7, the Bears forfeited the second game because of injuries, including several to pitchers. The sweep lifted the Pirates to 15-7 and 7-5.
The Bears (4-21, 2-16) canceled two scheduled games with the Trenton (Mo.) Blue Jays Sunday and have forfeited two scheduled Zone 2 East games with Independence Post 21 games at Crysler Stadium tonight.
The Bears return to action Wednesday in the Springfield Fourth of July Tournament at 4:30 p.m. at Springfield Parkview High School against a team called Locker Room.
