Nola Irene (Blatt) Dawson
Nola Irene (Blatt) Dawson, age 93, was born September 26, 1918, in Emporia, Kan., to Elnora Euretta Boswell Blatt Hedges and Oliver Judson Blatt. She grew up and lived in the Lamoni area until the last few months of her life, when she resided with her daughter, Judi, and Bill Faunce in Independence, Mo. She died February 18, 2012, with her children and most of her grandchildren close by.
She attended Patrick Country School and graduated from Lamoni High School in 1936 with a teaching certificate. Nola was baptized into the R.L.D.S Church and remained a faithful member of the Davis City Congregation until its closing.
She married Gerald Rex Dawson Sr. on August 25, 1938, in an outdoor ceremony on Big Creek Hill, making their home on a farm east of Lamoni. To this union were born six children, Linda Kay, Bonnie Jean, Judith Anne, Gerald Rex Jr., William Arthur and Katherine Susan.
As a child, Nola began her rich legacy of prose and poetry mostly about her life experiences and her loved ones. She was an avid reader and enjoyed her scriptures and mysteries and old classics. She loved to play cards, do jigsaw and jumble puzzles and watching Iowa Hawkeye sports on T.V. Nola was a humble homemaker making all who crossed her doorstep feel at home and loved. She and Gerald always had a productive garden, and she loved springtime flowers, birds, blue October skies, gently falling snowflakes and autumn colors. Her home was always open to her children’s friends, Zion’s Leaguers, the 4-H and Skylark groups she led and the children she baby-sat when her own left home.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Gerald in 2006, her sister, Ruby Cracraft, and brother, Raymond Floy Blatt, many sister and brother-in-laws and nieces and nephews. A son Billy, died in a tragic barn fire in 1955.
To all who knew her she leaves behind a legacy of selflessness and caring; always an example of charity and kindness.
Survivors include her children, Linda and Raymond Sams of Sibley, Mo., Bonnie and Bruce Krudis of Canyon Country, Calif., Judi and Bill Faunce of Independence, Mo., Jerry and Marcia Dawson of Northville, Mich., and Kathy and Brad Walters of Iowa City, Iowa; grandchildren, Susan and Jim McAfee, Stephanie Smith, Jeremy and Merry Sams, Todd Krudis, David Krudis, Brad and Rhonda Hood, Cory Hood, Jackie Neach, Tim and Lucinda Faunce, William Dawson, Heather and Jimmy Grinnell, and Natasha and Jason Coyne; 20 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
