Solid pitching lifted Lawrence (Kan.) past Blue Springs South 2-1 Friday in the season opener for each.

The Jaguars were held to Chanze Mason’s single in the seventh inning when they left the bases loaded.

Left-hander Albert Minnis, who is headed to Wichita State , struck out 14 in six innings for the victory.

Blake Pummill was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on an error with the only South run in the fourth inning.

Lawrence responded with the two game-winning runs in the bottom of the inning.

Loser Drew Casper and Gehrig Hudson allowed Lawrence only four hits.

“Although we didn’t hit the ball I was very proud of the guys tonight,” South coach Ben Baier said. “They were playing the defending Kansas Class 6 state champions and facing a stud pitcher.

“We had a chance to win the game at the end that said a lot about our effort.”
