The season’s first loss came sooner than usual for the Blue Springs Rod’s Sports Athletics.
The perennial area American Legion power fell 9-2 to a much improved Sedalia Post 642 Travelers team Monday in the championship of the annual Memorial Day Invitational Tournament at Crysler Stadium.
Sedalia’s Logan Smith had as many hits as the entire A’s team with a two singles, double and home run and four RBIs to lead Post 642, which at 5-0 is off to one of its best starts in recent years.
Three pitchers held to the A’s to only four hits.
“It was a fun weekend,” said A’s right fielder Matt McHenry, who played this spring for Judson College, an NAIA school located in Chicago. “There are a lot of new players. We have lots to learn. Tyler Reed and Andrew Rider pitched well in the tournament.”
Sedalia collected 12 hits with Smith leading the way.
“It was my greatest Legion game,” Smith said. “We are excited about the season. We are stacked 1 to 9 (in the lineup). I don’t think we won a tournament last year.”
Winning pitcher John Eiserman and Dylan Mays each had two hits and Alan Jungitsch homered for the Travelers. The final three hitters in the lineup combined to go 6-for-11.
Kyle Seithel allowed 10 hits and six runs – two were unearned – in six innings in suffering the loss. He singled in the second A’s run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The A’s, who won their opening four tournament games, played catch-up the entire game. Sedalia scored single runs in the second and third innings for an early lead.
Keeston Terry doubled in Dan McConigle with Blue Springs’ first run in the bottom of the third inning.
Veteran A’s manager Mike Rooney for the most part was pleased with his team’s 4-1 record in the tournament.
“We played four good games but in the fifth game we had no desire,” Rooney said. “We just showed up.”
As for other Fifth District teams in the tournament, Oak Grove Post 379 and Raytown Post 596 each went 3-1; Blue Springs Post 499/Fike and Independence Post 21 each finished 2-2; Lee’s Summit Post 189 Auxiliary Outlaws went 1-3 and the R.L. Clore Post 189 Bulldogs and the Independence VFW Post 1000 Bears each went 0-4. Oak Grove’s only loss was to Sedalia, which cost Post 379 a berth in the title game.
