Washburn University football player Zach Watkins is one of seven men nominated for the 2008-09 Ken B. Jones Award as the MIAA Student-Athlete of the Year.
Watkins, a junior linebacker for the Ichabods, is a graduate of Truman High School.
A 12-member panel of athletics directors, senior women’s administrators, faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors representing each school and the conference office selects the winners for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association honor.
Judging is done in four area, including athletic, academic and community service achievements. Nominees must be at least a junior and have a 3.00 cumulative grade point average or better.
Watkins was named to the Don Hansen Football Gazette Division II All-American second team and to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American team after finishing second in the MIAA in tackles with 120. His tackles-per-game average was 12th in the nation.
The male and female winners will be named Monday.
