  • The Kansas City Royals and Indiana State left-hander Sean Manaea have agreed to a $3.55 million deal, the team announced today.
The Royals introduced Manaea, who they took No. 34 overall in the competitive balance portion of the June 6 draft, at a news conference today at Kauffman Stadium.
Manaea was considered a first-round talent but slipped to the Royals at No. 34 overall in part due to a hip injury that will require surgery. Royals team physician Dr. Vincent Key said earlier this month that Manaea should be ready by the time spring training comes around.
Manaea signed for more than the Royals’ No. 8 pick overall, Stephen F. Austin University shortstop Hunter Dozier, who reportedly agreed to a $2.2 million bonus.
Manaea was 5-4 with a 1.47 ERA for the Sycamores this past season while pitching with the hip injury. In the 2012 Cape Cod collegiate summer league, he was 5-1 with a 1.22 ERA, 85 strikeouts and just seven walks to earn the B.F.C. Whitehouse Top Pitcher Award and the Robert A. McNeece Outstanding Pro Prospect Award.
