David Hunt is the principal at Blackburn Elementary School in the Independence School District. He has been in education for 30 years and been principal at Blackburn Elementary for 21 years. He will be retiring from education as of Wednesday.
1 Why did you want to become a teacher?
I always enjoyed working with young people and get excited watching as they learn new things.
2 What will be your favorite memory of Blackburn Elementary?
The morning hugs from all the kids.
3 Now that you have retired, what do you plan to do?
Spending time with my lovely wife will be my main priority. I also teach classes for Park University, do magic shows and in December a lot of Santa Claus.
4 What has been the biggest change you have seen in education?
I have seen many things come around full circle, such as reading methods, instructional strategies, etc. The biggest change I have seen in the last several years is the amount of time we spend on assessing students.
5 Why should more young people become teachers?
It is a very rewarding career, knowing that you have helped the next generation be prepared for success as they become adults. The pay is fine and the retirement system is fantastic.
