  • Blue Springs police are seeking three or four black males who allegedly robbed and shot an ice cream truck driver on his route Tuesday afternoon.
The driver, a 47-year-old man, is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries at a local hospital, Blue Springs police spokesperson Jeremy Dickstein said.
Dickstein said the driver was on his route at the corner of Jackson and 29th streets in Blue Springs at approximately 4:30 p.m. when he was stopped by three or four black juvenile males.
“They engaged him in a conversation and when they tried to gain entry into the vehicle and rob him, a struggle ensued and he was shot several times in the face and upper extremities,” Dickstein said.
Dickstein said after the suspects fled, the injured driver managed to get back in his truck and drive north a few blocks to the 700 block of 29th Street, where he dialed 911 on his cell phone and awaited help.
Witnesses reported seeing a maroon car with a bungee cord holding down the hood fleeing the scene westbound. Witnesses also saw some fleeing on foot.
Dickstein said a patrolman detained two black males at 37th and Jackson shortly after the incident occurred. He said police were still trying to determine if they “were involved, were just witnesses or just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Police are continuing to investigate the crime scene.
