  • A car caught fire inside and damaged the R Signs building on Cottage Avenue in Independence Wednesday afternoon.
The Independence Fire Department doused the blaze after being called to the scene – the former AGCO plant – at approximately 3:45 p.m.
Independence Assistant Fire Chief Mark Carrick said one worker in the building was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and released. No firefighters were injured.
Two fire investigators were on the scene, but Carrick said the cause of the fire in the car was unknown as of Wednesday evening.
Carrick said fighting the blaze was difficult for the 32 firefighters who battled the blaze because of how far it was inside the building.
“What made it challenging was that it was 300 to 400 feet back inside the building,” Carrick said. “There was a lot of heavy smoke coming from the building when they got here. They tried to find the seed of the fire, but it took awhile because there was so much smoke.”
Carrick had no idea on the amount of damage to the building but the car was destroyed.
“They had a lot of salvage stuff going on in there, so it’s hard to tell now what’s damaged and what’s not.”
