John Edward Shields, 69, of Blue Springs, Mo., passed away Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Blue Springs, Mo.

John was born Dec. 28, 1938, to Byron B. and Freda Hayes Shields. He was a Methodist by faith. In the 1970s, John owned Shields Chevrolet and Buick. In the late 1970s and early 1980s he owned and operated Shields Real Estate and Auctioneering. He was a member of the Army National Guard, and the Lions Club of Paola, Kan. He enjoyed music, fishing and hunting. He was also a volunteer at the Vesper Hall in Blue Springs, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Weston Shileds and sister Betty Matney.

He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Seaman of Blue Springs, Mo.; his sons, Brett E. Shields and wife Toni of Pleasant Hill, Mo., Jeffrey E. Shields and wife Deborah of Winter Park, Fla., Spencer C. Shields and wife Kristy of Olathe, Kan., and Wesley R. Shields and wife Andrea of Olathe, Kan.; sister Gloria Stone of Louisburg, Kan.; 11 grandchildren. John is also survived by his best friend and companion for the last five years, Larisa Anders.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Meyers Funeral Chapel. Visitation one hour prior to services. Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Paola Cemetery, Paola, Kan. The family of John will be accepting friends at the El Tapatio Restaurant after services in Paola, Kan. Memorial contributions may be made to help defray funeral expenses.
