The Jackson County Collections Department has extended hours that county residents can pay taxes along with easier methods of payment.

The collections department will be open until 6 p.m. today. The collection offices are located on the first floor of the Jackson County Courthouse at 415 E. 12th St. and the courthouse  annex at 308 W. Kansas Ave. in Independence.

“We realize that there are many citizens whose work hours may not allow them access to the Collections Department during our normal 8 to 5 p.m. office hours but they may need to make payments or adjustments to their account,” said county spokesman Jeph BurroughsScanlon. “Our extended hours, during our busiest time of the year are to help accommodate these citizens.”

For payments made by mail to be on time, the parcel of mail must be postmarked by Wednesday.

The department started mailing tax statements to residents earlier than previous years so people have a chance pay earlier to avoid long lines at courthouses.

But residents don’t have to stand in lines at a courthouse. They can go to the county’s Web site at www.jacksongov.org and pay their taxes online. The on-line payment option will be closed at 7 p.m. tonight.

The county had 4,470 parcels paid online Monday alone and for the most recently concluded tax year, with 53,380 parcels paid online representing a 15 percent growth increase from the prior tax season.

The department collects and accounts for approximately $870 million in tax revenues for more than 60 taxing jurisdictions like cities and school districts withing the county.

Senior citizens can pay taxes through a “quad payment” program. It allows seniors the option to pay the county real estate tax bill on their residence in four equal installments without the accumlation of interest or penality. The first installment must be paid before or on the last day of the year of that tax year. Each subsequent installment must be paid on or before Feb. 28, May 31 and Aug. 31.
