A pair of local high school golfers are in contention at the 2010 PGA Junior Series tournament at Fox Run Golf Club in Eureka.


Ryan Buerk, the Blue Springs graduate who claimed the Class 4 individual state championship last month fired a 78 and is eight shots off the lead in the age 16-18 bracket in the three-day tournament that features 110 junior players from 13 different states.


Buerk posted a 39 on each nine and currently sits 6-over-par at the par-72 Fox Run.


Chris Fryatt of Lee’s Summit North opened with a 3-over 75 (38-37). He is just five shots behind the leader, Chase Hanna of Leawood, Kan., who shot a 33 on the back nine to finish the first round at 2-under 70.


Both the boys and girls age 16-18 winners earn berths into the Junior PGA Championship Aug. 2-5 at Sycamore Hills Country Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.


Lauren Fender of Lee’s Summit West is in 12th place in the girls 16-18 division after shooting 88. Lauren English of Bloomington, Ill., and Shelby Phillips of Gilbert, Ariz., are tied for the lead.
