The Groundwater Foundation of Lincoln, Neb., has named Independence as a 2010 Groundwater Guardian Community for its efforts to protect local groundwater supplies.

The Groundwater Foundation of Lincoln, Neb., has named Independence as a 2010 Groundwater Guardian Community for its efforts to protect local groundwater supplies.

Independence has been designated as a Groundwater Guardian for 10 years and is among 132 communities in 34 states and one Canadian province to receive the designation.

As a program of the Groundwater Foundation, Groundwater Guardian encourages and recognizes local groundwater protection and education activities. The Groundwater Foundation is a nonprofit organization with a mission to educate people and to inspire action to ensure sustainable, clean groundwater for future generations. The U.S. Geological Survey supports the Groundwater Guardian program.
